Suggested avatar for the Facebook “Disabled”

November 23, 2010

Though the actual process is closer to a cyber-disappearance, Facebook uses another loaded term for those profiles it deems in violation of its opaque rules: disabled. Even the disabled need an avatar. If you suffer from a similar condition, feel free to right click the image above and park it wherever you like.

In related news, while Facebook makes a bid to become your default home page (Don’t do it. Seriously.), its latest act of hubris is blocking outgoing links and “likes” for a parody site called Lamebook.

Finally, if Tim Berners-Lee’s passionate manifesto wasn’t convincing enough, read Zadie Smith’s long, endlessly quotable essay, in the guise of a movie review of The Social Network and a book review of Jaron Lanier’s You Are Not a Gadget. She has a lot of important things to say about Facebook, and she’s one hell of a writer.
